The reality is most people aren't going to store enough water to last 6 months. Most aren't even going to have enough to last 3 months.

What I suggest doing is storing as much water as you can afford and have space for. You can buy it a couple packs at a time when you find it on sale or you can buy one five gallon container a month and stack them in a closet or your basement. I prefer the smaller water bottles because they're easier to stack and store. I keep a few 5-gallon containers full in case I have to pack up in a hurry and hit the road and I've got a couple 50-gallon barrels in my storage shed that I can use if I'm able to stay at home.

Store your water in a cool, dark area and rotate your stock. I try to switch all of my water bottles out every 6 months and I refill my 5- and 50- gallon containers once every 4 months.
